Where the Toyota Used to Be

When Vivienne Stewart and her husband, Paul, bought their vacation home in Pawling, N.Y., in 1994, they planned to tear it down. Though it had more than 4,500 square feet of living space and four bedrooms, there was no place for the family to gather and the kitchen was so small that there wasn't even room for a table. For the Stewarts, who had five children, the floor plan just didn't make sense.
